North Lauderdale Teen in Pool Party Assault Accepts Plea Deal

The teen who was caught on camera throwing an elderly woman into a swimming pool at a North Lauderdale pool party in May 2017 will serve 200 hours of community service as a part of a plea deal.

Leon Balfour now 17, agreed to a plea deal of 100 community service hours working with the elderly and the other half working at an animal shelter.  He'll also have to undergo a psychological evaluation and be on probation for a year.  It's the punishment the victim, Nancy James, 68, thought was fit for the crime.

During the hearing the teen read an apology letter to the victim saying he made a "horrible mistake."

The judge said in court Tuesday that Balfour's lenient sentence was due in part to the victim's compassion toward the teen.

Leon Balfour, his mother Shekita Johnson and attorney Michael Hursey speak to the media after the hearing Tuesday.
