Jury selection is underway Wednesday in a Broward courtroom ahead of the trial of a man accused of murdering his estranged wife and mother of three.
Vilet Torrez, 38, disappeared from her Miramar home in March of 2012. Despite her body never being found, authorities believe she was slain by her husband, 43-year-old Cid Torrez.
Detectives say Cid followed his wife's movements through GPS tracking and that a cadaver dog pointed to his car's trunk. He's also accused of asking a friend about buying a gun and hiding a body.
Prosecutors will put Cid on trial for murder, but first, will have to prove that Vilet is dead, and that her death was caused by the criminal act of the man she was married to for 13 years.
Prosecutors and Torrez’s defense lawyer declined to comment on the case, in which jurors will be asked to send Cid Torrez to prison for the rest of his life.
Broward prosecutors have recently won two convictions in murder cases involving missing bodies. But one of those convictions was overturned because there was not enough evidence. The accused killer is now a free man.
