Canadian Baby Gets I.D. Card Without Gender Designation, A World First

A baby in Canada has been issued a health identification card that doesn't specify their gender as male or female. Campaigners claim that this could be a "world first."

British Columbia-born Searly Atli Doty did not undergo a genital inspection after birth, campaign group Gender Free I.D. Coalition says in a statement. The group's vision, stated on its website, is "to remove all gender/sex designations from identity documents."

Despite difficulties in obtaining a birth certificate, a health card for the baby with the sex listed as "U" has been issued.

The Gender Free I.D. Coalition believes that the "U" stands for "unspecified or unknown" and that Searyl is the first child to be registered in such a way without sex or gender being specified.

Supporters say that baby Searyl should decide how they identify once they are old enough to develop their own identity.
