First Cases of Dog Flu Reported in Florida

For the first time in our state's history, dog flu has been confirmed in Florida.

The University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine says they've confirmed seven cases of the dog flu, also known as H3N3 canine influenza virus.  It's highly contagious, but most dogs reportedly recover at home and there's a vaccine to protect pets against it.

Dr. Melanie Thomas a veterinarian at Coral Springs Animal Hospital has some advice for pet parents.

"I think the important thing is if your dog is showing any sort of respiratory signs to seek veterinary care.  There is a test for it [dog flu] and there's a swab that you can do to test for the disease," said Dr. Thomas.

Experts say there's no evidence the dog flu infects people.
