Update: City of Miami Commissioners Pass Polystyrene Ban

Update: 5/25/17 2:40 p.m.

Styrofoam will no longer be allowed at beaches and parks in the City of Miami.  City of Miami Commissioners agreeing to pass an ordinance banning polystyrene [Styrofoam] Thursday.  The city's also bringing environmental education into the Historic Virginia Key Beach Park.

Styrofoam could be banned in City of Miami parks and beaches soon.

During their meeting Thursday City of Miami Commissioners will decide whether or not polystyrene (Styrofoam) should be allowed at their parks and beaches.  Commissioner Ken Russell is behind the ban and says it's a way the city can become more eco-friendly and still comply with state legislation.

"For example, I couldn't do an outright ban on plastic or Styrofoam sales or use in the city as a whole.  So what I wanted to do was look at an ordinance that I could implement that is fully governed by the city," said Commissioner Russell.

He says the measure that would change city code will have it's second reading Thursday and commissioners will decide whether or not it becomes an ordinance.
