Miami-Dade Police Call Out Hoax News Alert

Miami-Dade Police officers are warning the public of a hoax document that is making the rounds on social media and various texting groups.

The hoax uses what appears to be an official Miami-Dade County document and advises women to stay away from young people crying on the side of a road who ask to be taken to a particular address.

In the fake memo, women are urged to take these people to the police station, stating it's a new way for gang members to commit rape.

"We do see these quite often, usually about twice a year and they normally come right before summer when kids get out of school," said Miami-Dade Police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta.

Readers are told the warnings have been shared by CNN and FOX News, although that is not the case.

"We encourage people to arm themselves with valid information and how do we do that?  Is by verifying it.  Go to our website, fee free to call," said Detective Zabaleta.

Detective Zabaleta advises people to stay up to date by following the Miami-Dade Police Department on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Nextdoor with the handle @MiamiDadePD.

Police want to reiterate that the document in question is fake and that if anyone is suspicious of any action, they should call 9-1-1 or 305-4-POLICE for non-emergencies.
