President Trump's first budget proposal is heading to Capitol Hill. Major cuts to food stamps are a part of it.
In the proposal, a 10-year, 193 billion dollar reduction in food stamps, almost 30 percent, promising to drive millions of people off the program. Paco Velez CEO of the Feeding South Florida Food Bank says they may need extra support from the community in order to keep up with a potential rise in demand.
"Potential federal cuts like this always necessitates non-profits to do more and get more involved. To make sure that services are going to the families when government cutbacks happen," said Velez.
He says food assistance helps businesses, farmers and job growth and taking it away could affect more than just the recipients.
