WATCH: Motorcycle Vs. 10-Foot Gator in Southwest Florida

A gator was hit by a motorcycle in Southwest Florida early Friday morning.

Investigators said Calun Nelson was riding his motorcycle westbound on State Road 674 in Wimauma when he approached the 10-foot-long gator that was traveling across the road.

Nelson tried to stop before colliding with the gator, but he was unsuccessful.

He hit the gator and was thrown off his motorcycle and landed on the overpass for the Little Manatee River.

Nelson’s injuries from the crash were minor and he was transported to Tampa General Hospital.

Gator trappers were called to the scene to retrieve the gator’s body, and the gator is now in critical condition. Authorities say the alligator was 10'9" long.

The accident closed lanes on SR 674, but the road has reopened.
