United Way ALICE Report Reveals Who's Struggling to Make Ends Meet

ALICE, a United Way acronym which stands for 'Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed' Report, focuses on who's struggling financially in our community.

The ALICE Report reveals nearly 300,000 Broward County working households aren't able to afford housing, food, child care and transportation.  The United Way of Broward County President, Kathleen Cannon, says they're taking action by providing tool kits to families, local government and employers.

"We have actions in all of those areas, very tangible, real, applicable things that we can all do to assist ALICE families and to assist folks.  Also to make sure ALICE families don't start to fall more behind," said Cannon.

The non-profit is getting community leaders involved, like Broward County Commissioner Nan Rich, who says we need a dedicated source of funding.

"We have an opportunity here to do what's right for the people in our community and help business, create economic development and give people the kinds of opportunities they need to either rent or own a home and participate fully in our community," said Rich.

More than 31% of ALICE households are hardworking residents who have little or no savings and are one emergency away from falling into poverty.
