DUI Driver Arrested After Hitting Three Children, Fleeing the Scene

Sheriff's officials in Polk County have arrested 48-year-old John Camfield, a former law enforcement officer from Mississippi, who fled after hitting three children as they got off a school bus Thursday afternoon in Poinciana.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Carrie Horstman said in a news release that two of the children were critically injured when the car hit them. Camfield also hit another car before being arrested by an off-duty sheriff's deputy who lives in the area.

Horstman says the school bus had already left the area when the children were hit.

Camfield faces multiple charges including DUI with serious bodily injury, leaving the scene of a crash with injuries and reckless driving.

Officials said the children are between 12 and 15 years old. They have not released the names of the young victims.
