South Florida Pair Finds Dead Bat in Their Salad

A recall has been issued for Fresh Express after two people found a dead bat in the packaged salad they were eating.

Fresh Express recalled its Organic Marketside Spring Mix Saturday, which was shipped to Wal-Mart stores in the Southeast. Two people in Miami reported eating some salad before the bat was found in the box.

The bat was sent to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) rabies lab for testing, though researchers could not rule out the deadly virus due to the animal's deteriorated condition.

The CDC teamed up with the Florida Department of Health and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to investigate the situation. The CDC says the people who ate the affected salad are being monitored, but are currently in good health without any signs of rabies.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the bat was tested for rabies, but because it was in deteriorated condition, rabies couldn't be definitively ruled out.

The packaged salads were sold in a clear container with a best-if-used-by date of April 14. Customers can receive a full refund by contacting the Fresh Express Consumer Response Center.
