FLL Overflows With Cats and Dogs Hoping For a New Home

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport was all a-buzz, err, a-bark, Saturday as about 160 dogs and 200 cats touched down on the runway from Puerto Rico.

The animals were flown from Puerto Rico to Fort Lauderdale as part of "Operation Breathing Room" — an effort by the Humane Society to free up overcrowded shelters throughout Puerto Rico.

The animals are being will be taken to various animal welfare organizations across the United States, including the Humane Society of Broward County.

The project is part of a larger program to address the crisis of the commonwealth’s staggering 300,000 street dogs.
