Former Florida Commissioner Struck and Killed While Riding Bicycle

A former central Florida politician is dead after being struck by a car while riding his bicycle, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers say 61-year-old Frank Attkisson was riding his bike around 7 p.m. Thursday when a car hit him on Kissimmee Park Road near St. Cloud. He was taken to a hospital where he died.

Attkisson served in the Florida House of Representatives from 2000 to 2008 and as the mayor of Kissimmee, Florida from 1996 to 2000. In 2010 he ran for and won a seat on the Osceola County Commission, and two years later was elected the commission’s chairman.

Incident reports say 26-year-old Kirstie Jean Knoebel was driving behind Attkisson and rammed into the back of his bike. She wasn't injured and alcohol isn't suspected as a cause of the crash.
