More than 140 email confirm that Markeith Loyd was blinded in one eye during his arrest.
Loyd was arrested on Jan. 17 after a week-long manhunt following the fatal shooting of Orlando police Lt. Debra Clayton. An arrest video shows an officer kicking Loyd after he crawled out of a home where he'd been hiding. Authorities say they used force because he was resisting arrest.
A month before Clayton was killed, Loyd shot and killed his pregnant ex-girlfriend, Sade Dixon, authorities allege. Clayton was trying to arrest him for that homicide the morning she was killed.
Loyd has since filed a Freedom of Information Act request to retrieve the abundance of emails. According to a report by the Orlando Sentinel, one email to Orlando Police Chief John Mina says surgery [as a result of the injuries Loyd received during his response to resistance] would leave Loyd blind in his left eye.
Gov. Rick Scott appointed a special prosecutor after Orlando-area State Attorney Aramis Ayala announced she wouldn't seek the death penalty.
The special prosecutor, State Attorney Brad King, filed notice of intent Monday to seek the death penalty.
