MDX 836 Extension Project Garners Extra Support

South Florida drivers want to see their toll dollars go farther.

Nearly 90 percent of the more than 50,000 Miami-Dade Expressway Authority drivers polled support a plan to extend the system into underserved communities such as Northeast and Southwest Miami-Dade with multi-modal solutions. Those polled especially want to see extensions made to the 836-Dolphin Expressway.

MDX's Mario Diaz says the expansion is still in the planning phase, but they're trying to address now the needs of the more than million residents and businesses west of 137th Avenue.

The planning phase is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2018. MDX would then immediately proceed to design, permitting and eventual construction of the first segments.

The construction itself, which would be fully funded by tolls, could potentially begin in three to five years.
