Nation's Newest Tall Ship Visits Fort Lauderdale

The SSV Oliver Hazard Perry, the largest civilian Sailing School Vessel in the nation, is now docked at Pier 66 in Fort Lauderdale.

Oliver Hazard Perry is the first ocean-going full-rigged tall ship built in the U.S. in over 100 years, reigning from Rhode Island. At 200 feet, her accommodations hold 32 people overnight in addition to 17 professional crew members.

The ship has already offered opportunities for explorers of all ages to participate in one of two round-trip voyages to Cuba (March 10-18 and March 18-26); and is now gearing up to go on an arctic exploration in partnership with Florida International University.

It took six years and $18 million to build America's newest tall ship. Many parts were actually donated, including the 127-foot tall masts. The ship is a Coast Guard-certified school sailing vessel, so there are no passengers. Instead, they are called "trainees".

This year marks the ship's third season afloat.
