Police Investigate Following Gruesome, Pre-Vacation Crash in Dania Beach

A very unfortunate event for this family of six that was planning to head out on vacation Monday.

Officials say a family of six was preparing to leave for a cruise today, when they were hit by a pickup truck while walking to their hotel in Dania Beach Sunday night.

They were walking on the grass when they were hit, and a 24-year-old woman's leg was severed. Reports say a 10-year-old boy also suffered serious leg injuries.

Broward Sheriff's Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles says the family members were walking on a wide stretch of grass when the truck hit them. The truck then struck a fence and a light pole. Investigators are looking at alcohol and speed as possible factors in the crash.

Three victims and the driver were taken to hospitals. It's not clear if charges will be filed against the 57-year old driver.
