Coding Classes no substitute for Language Classes

A committee in the state capitol approves a bill to encourage high school students to learn computer coding... but they've removed a controversial provision that would have allowed students to count those computer courses as their foreign language requirement.

Linda Markley with the Florida Foreign Language Association says those subjects have nothing in common and there would be consequences when applying for college. “This would create a disadvantage for Florida students applying for colleges and universities outside of the state, where two years of world language credits are required for entrance.

A House subcommittee passed an amended version of HB 265. The new measure removes any mention of foreign languages and focuses more on how the state Department of Education can better promote computer coding and IT learning in Florida's public schools.
