Did Trump Really Even Share an IRISH Proverb At All???

President Donald Trump stood next to Irish Prime Minister Edna Kenny at the Friends of Ireland luncheon on Thursday as he recited his favorite "Irish" proverb:

“Always remember to forget the friends that proved untrue, but never forget to remember those that have stuck by you,” recited Trump. “We know that, politically speaking.”

But many Irish folk took to Twitter to question the authenticity of his St. Patty's festive proverb. Take a look:

Some claimed that, instead of Ireland, the post actually originated from Nigerian poet Albashir Adam Alhassan:

Still, some are backing the president up, claiming that there are several websites that list the saying as an old Irish proverb. Did Trump's team find the saying on one of those outlets?

So what's the bottom line? Where the heck did this saying originate? We may have better luck spotting a leprachaun than actually finding out the answer this St. Patty's Day!
