Governor Scott Removes Attorney From Loyd Case

Governor Rick Scott assigns a new state attorney to the Markeith Loyd case.

The state attorney who decided against seeking the death penalty for accused Orlando cop killer Markeith Loyd is being removed from the case.  Governor Rick Scott has reassigned the case after State Attorney Aramis Ayala refused his request to recuse herself.  Thursday, Ayala said the death penalty "has no public safety benefit."

WIOD Legal Analyst Mark Eiglarsh says the law requires her to consider it.

"If she's personally handling the case and she could never even consider imposing the death penalty she needs to give this case to someone else who will consider it," said Eiglarsh.

The case has been reassigned to State Attorney Brad King.

Loyd is accused of killing his pregnant ex-girlfriend, her unborn child, and executing Orlando Police Lieutenant Debra Clayton while she was lying on the ground.
