Plastic Bag Ban Coming To Coral Gables

The question "paper or plastic" could soon become a thing of the past in Coral Gables.

The city commission has given its initial approval to a plastic bag ban.

That means businesses couldn't offer customers plastic bags for their purchases.

There are exceptions including plastic bags without handles, dry cleaning, pet wast, trash and bags for prescriptions.

Violators would first get a warning, but if caught a third time, a retailer would get a $500 fine.

The ordinance is expected to get final approval as early as the March 28th meeting.

Coral Gables, which already has a Styrofoam ban, would become the first municipality in the state to ban plastic bags.
