Is Clothing the Newest Contaminant in Florida Waters?

Gulf Coast researchers say comfortable clothing is potentially contaminating seafood.

A study is being launched to monitor microscopic plastics in the waters from the Florida Keys to Texas, as clothing is an emerging source of plastic that is increasingly entering oceans.

The project will expand on a year's worth of data that found microfibers flowing down bathroom drains around Florida.

University of Florida researcher Maia McGuire says microfibers can come from yoga pants, Patagonia's cozy jackets, sweat-limiting athletic wear and other synthetic materials.

Microfiber pollution remains under investigation, but data has already prompted clothing company Patagonia to support research into the prevalence of microfiber pollution.
