Authorities on the Hunt For Mental Patient, Escape Accomplice

Authorities are on the hunt for a patient and the accomplice who helped her escape a mental health facility.

Officials say 47-year-old patient Genevieve Mittermaier was seen using a cell phone at South Florida State Hospital around 4 p.m. Tuesday. Shortly after, a black BMW sedan believed to be driven by 55-year-old David Thomas Sankey pulled up in front of the hospital.

Sankey exited the vehicle and threw a rope ladder over a fence guarding the property, which Mittermaier used to climb and escape from the facility.

The relationship between Mittermaier and Sankey is unknown at this time

Both the escaped patient and her accomplice are still at large. Police request that anyone who spots the two do not approach them. They ask that witnesses call 911 for assistance instead.
