Florida Reaches Compromise Regarding Death Penalty Law

Florida will now require a unanimous jury recommendation before the death penalty can be imposed.

Gov. Rick Scott signed a bill late Monday despite his keeping quiet about problems with the state's death penalty law.

During the beginning of their annual legislative session, lawmakers rushed to get the bill passed in hopes of fixing what has been found as unconstitutional two times since 2016.

The fix is being seen as an option that's "better than nothing" for both death penalty proponents and opponents.

Legal questions about Florida's death penalty have brought executions to a halt in the past year. The state has executed 23 prisoners under Scott, more than any other governor since capital punishment was reinstated in Florida in 1979.
