Coral Gables May be First FL Community to Ban Plastic Bags

Officials in Coral Gables are hoping to ban a notorious pollutant: plastic bags. This effort comes after  a judge upheld Coral Gables' ban on Styrofoam products, finding that a state law barring the city from enforcing the ordinance was unconstitutional.

The new ordinance, sponsored by Commissioner Vince Largo, would prohibit the sale, use, or distribution of plastic bags by retail stores in the city.

Hundreds of cities across the nation have already banned plastic bags, but Coral Gables would be the first in Florida.

Officials believe the clear threat to wildlife and marine life is evident enough for the ban to be honored.

Largo will meet with local business leaders Thursday to discuss the ordinance. Largo will then propose the ban during the Coral Gables commission's meeting Tuesday.
