Protective Measures for Immigrant Student, Parents

The Broward County school board is considering a measure that would mitigate fear surrounding immigrant parents in the school district.

The Florida Immigrant Coalition constantly receives calls from local parents who have stopped taking their children to school to recede into hiding (or because they are too scared to leave their own homes), according to a report by the Sun Sentinel

Similarly, Palm Beach County School officials said that fear surrounding immigrant rights and deportation measures may be steering students away from school. Approximately 8.5 percent of Hispanic elementary school girls missed at least 11 days of school (up from 6.3 percent the previous year). Boys saw a similar surge.

Broward school district is now debating a promise that will squash fears associated with possible, spontaneous deportation and retaliation for undocumented immigrants and their student children. The hope for the measure would be to bring children back to school and to ensure a safe environment.
