Happy 172nd Birthday, Florida! Let's Celebrate!

Florida originally gained statehood on March 3, 1845, and on this day, 172 years ago, the Sunshine State became the 27th member of the United States of America. 

And whether you're a seasonal resident, a native Floridian, a passionate vacationer, or a transplant, we all know it's not hard to love and gawk in the natural beauty of the state we call home. To pay homage to sunny Florida on the anniversary date of her statehood, here are some fun facts. After all, even if you're a native, there's always something new to learn!   • The name Florida means "land of flowers" in Spanish. It was discovered by Spanish Explorer Juan Ponce de Leon in 1513

  • Siesta Key Beach sand is made up of 99 percent quartz crystals, and is therefore comfortable and cool on the feet

  • When the state was founded, it entered the nation with a population of about 60,000. As of 2015, Florida ranks 3rd in population, with over 20.5 million residents

  •  Florida is the lightning capital of the U.S., as the state experiences more lightning strikes than anywhere else in the country

  • Tourism makes up a huge chunk of Florida's economy with nearly 1.4 million people working in the tourism industry in 2016. Florida has set tourism records for six consecutive years, with 112.8 million tourists in 2016

  • Florida's highest point is Britton Hill in Walton County, which climbs a staggering 345 feet above sea level

  • The largest metropolitan area in the state as well as the entire southeastern United States is the Miami metropolitan area, with about 5.8 million people

  • Miami installed the first bank ATM designed specifically for rollerbladers who couldn't enter a bank to use the cash machines

  • Florida is similar in size to England and Wales combined

  • Key Largo is known as the diving capital of the world

  • Walt Disney World spans 30,500 acres, making it roughly the size of San Francisco

  • Happy hour begins at 9 a.m. at the Schooner Wharf Bar in Key West

  • Florida has more golf courses than any other state in the country

  • Florida is home to more than 30,000 lakes, 1,000 golf courses, and 34 commercial wineries

  • Gatorade is named after the Florida Gators

  • Florida is the 29th most obese state in the country

  • The first suntan lotion was created by a Miami Beach pharmacist
