A Pompano Beach man is charged with kidnapping two Broward County girls and raping one of the victims.

Kevin Smith, 50, is accused of grabbing two girls as they walked to school in Lauderdale Lakes. In the separate incidents, the girls were grabbed and threatened with a knife to get into the car.

Authorities say Smith grabbed one girl on Friday, and forced her into his car at knife-point. Once inside, he allegedly raped the girl, then told her to get out. Monday, Smith grabbed another girl while she was on her way to school in the residential neighborhood just west of Boyd H. Anderson High School, Oriole Elementary School and Lauderdale Lakes Middle School . She was able to break free by hitting him in the face with her cellphone and running. The age of the victims has not been identified.

Smith was identified Tuesday. He is being held in jail and faces charges on two counts of kidnapping and one count of sexual assault with a weapon.

He has been in and out of state prison since 1985, with records showing a 2003 arrest on charges of sexual assault of a child under age 12.
