Red Light Cameras May Survive Another Year in Florida

A bill to ban those automated cameras to catch red light runners is run down by the Transportation Committee in the Florida Senate.  They generate lots of tickets that cost 158 bucks a pop, but Senator Frank Artiles (R-Miami) says they're not saving lives.

"We know for a fact that deaths have increased because of this program...deaths.  So it's not saving lives, this is not a unicorn, it's not a rainbow, we're not chasing fantasy land.  These are actual deaths that have occurred," said Sen. Artiles.

The cams generate lots of tickets that cost drivers 158 bucks a pop, and the private firms that supply those cameras make millions off them.  One company even hired 24 lobbyists to work the legislature.
