Diaz-Balart Pushes Bill To Create Zip Code for Miami Lakes

A South Florida Congressional Representative is trying to get the federal government to help some local constituents.

Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart has introduced a bill that would require the United States Post Office to create a zip code for the Town of Miami Lakes. A similar proposal made it through the House of Representatives last year but never made it through the Senate so it failed to become law.

"For far too long, Miami Lakes residents have dealt with the negative impact of lacking a unique ZIP Code for their town," said Diaz-Balart. "From higher insurance rates to election confusion, there are a number of reasons why a dedicated ZIP Code is necessary."

Currently, Miami Lakes is split among zip codes shared with Hialeah, Opa-Locka and Miami Gardens. Mayor Manny Cid has worked to give his town its own zip for years, even writing a letter to then-President Obama in 2014.

Language in the bill stipulates that if it should pass, the new zip code would go into effect by the end of September.
