Miami-Dade Uncertain After President Trump Goes After Sanctuary Cities

President Trump's signing of an executive order aimed at revoking federal funding for sanctuary cities, cities that refrain from prosecuting undocumented immigrants for violating federal immigration laws, could cost individual jurisdictions millions of dollars.

The Justice Department lists Miami-Dade as a sanctuary city, but Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez, tells NBC6 the county doesn't recognize itself as one.

"We comply with all state and federal laws on immigration. We advise ICE and all the federal agencies whenever we detain somebody that is an illegal immigrant," Gimenez said.

The disagreement could be because if an undocumented individual is arrested, the county jail can't pay for extended holds.
