Florida Winter Storm Update: Beware of "Refreezing" Ice

TALLAHASSEE -- The snowfall and sleet accompanying the North Florida winter storm is over. But extremely cold temperatures could cause roads and bridges to refreeze tonight.

The National Weather Service has posted extreme cold warnings for 15 Florida counties, including Bay, Escambia, Leon and Wakulla. Sixteen counties, including Alachua and Duval, are under a cold weather advisory and most of those are also under a freeze warning.

Governor DeSantis says power has been restored to 20,000 customers who lost it during the storm, with crews working to reconnect 18,000 other households and businesses in the dark.

Meantime, the state and NWS are totaling up new records for snowfall. Eight to nine inches near Milton breaks Florida's all time mark for snow. The National Weather Service Tallahassee office says six inches fell at several locations near Panama City. Tallahassee received almost two inches of winter precipitation, mostly sleet.
