Florida Manatees Expected To Keep ‘Threatened Species' Label

Federal wildlife officials releasing a proposal that would continue to classify Florida manatees as a threatened species, after environmentalists argued they should be reclassified as endangered.

For decades, the sea cows were considered endangered species, which can get them more protections than threatened species. But in 2017, federal officials reclassified Florida manatees as threatened.

Manatees face threats from getting hit by boats, red tide conditions killing sea grass and coastal development.
