The Broward County School Board will discuss make-up days on the calendar after Hurricanes Helene and Milton blew a hole in it.
Thanks to Hurricane Helene, Broward students lost one day of school and two days for Milton.
State Education Commissioner Manny Diaz says the required instructional hours students missed most likely will not be waived.
That means the fall semester could be stretched out into January or Broward students could face another unpopular option, shortening the weeklong Thanksgiving break and the two-week winter hiatus.
Broward Public Schools’ Superintendent Howard Hepburn says the options will be discussed on October 22nd.
“Hepburn will provide an update to the Board and community on the impact this may have on our school calendar during his upcoming superintendent update on Tuesday,” district Communications Chief John Sullivan wrote in an email to School Board members. “Please be aware that this may require Board action in a future board meeting.”
Meanwhile, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach County schools report that they padded their calendars and won't meet to make up any days.
Unfortunately, about 100 Hillsborough County schools remain without power due to Hurricane Milton and will remain closed on Tuesday.
