FLORIDA - As Hurricane Milton threatens the Florida coast with severe weather, communication could become a challenge due to potential power outages and disrupted cellular services.
However, new technology on smartphones offers a lifeline: satellite messaging.
Here's a breakdown of how to use satellite features on iPhones and Pixel phones:
Apple iPhone (iOS 18):
- New Feature: With the new iOS 18 update, iPhones can now send basic text messages via satellite to emergency contacts and family members. However, note that all parties involved need to be on iOS 18.
- Using Emergency SMS: Locate the "Satellite Connection Demo" option within Messaging app settings to practice connecting to a satellite. You'll need a clear view of the sky for this to work.
- Emergency SOS: If it's a life-or-death situation and regular SMS isn't available, use Emergency SOS, which also utilizes satellite technology for contacting emergency services.
Google Pixel 9 Series:
- Satellite SOS: Exclusively available on Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, and 9 Pro Fold, Google's Satellite SOS allows users to directly contact emergency services and share their location even without cellular coverage.
- Activation: Ensure Google Messages is your default messaging app. Dial 911, and if a network connection is unavailable, an option for "Satellite SOS" will appear in the dialer.
- Sending SOS: Follow the on-screen prompts to activate Satellite SOS, fill out an emergency questionnaire describing your situation, and choose whether to notify emergency contacts.
- Connecting to Satellite: Hold your phone with a clear view of the sky to connect. Once connected, expect a response from emergency services within minutes.
Remember, these features are for emergencies only.
