11-Year-Old Girl Accused Of Threatening To Shoot Up Middle School

Another local student has been arrested for threatening to shoot up a school.

The St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office says an 11-year old girl posted on social media yesterday her threat against Southern Oaks Middle in Port St. Lucie. The Instagram post, according to officials, "insinuated a shooting at the school."

School staff and deputies quickly identified the girl, searched her and deemed the threat not credible, but in a Facebook post, the Sheriff's Office writes that "her actions caused panic and threats like this are against the law."

Sheriff Keith Pearson says the girl was arrested and faces "severe disciplinary consequences, up to and including expulsion." He says they take every threat, whether made in person or online, seriously and wants the community to follow the mantra, "If you see something, say something."

That's exactly what the school's principal said happened in a message sent out to parents, thanking students for reporting suspicious activity to administrators.
