ST. PETERSBURG, FL -- State officials are rolling out rules to implement the new Florida law that goes into effect next year, banning most social media use by those under 16.
14-and 15-year-olds will only be allowed to have accounts with parental consent. One of three rules declares that willfully disregarding age is a reckless violation of state restrictions.
Psychologist Dr. Jennifer Katzenstein with the Center for Behavioral Health at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, says rules need to take into account the fact that today's teens and tweens are social media natives. "Our kids are smart and they can navigate these platforms and the internet far better than we can, including myself and my own child."
Katzenstein says teens and tweens acknowledge the pitfalls of social media, referring to their own use of platorms as "toxic."
The rule also bans minors from accessing online pornography sites.
