Homeless Protest Outside Lake Worth Beach City Hall

"Housing, not handcuffs." That was the message from protestors outside city hall in Lake Worth Beach yesterday.

Members of the homeless community and their activists are upset about a new state law that will mandate local governments ban people from sleeping in public areas.

The nation's highest court just ruled to uphold the law.

CBS 12 News caught up with City Commissioner Christopher McVoy who was taking part in the demonstration.

They’re not going to evaporate into thin air, and, and this is a national ruling from Scotus. So, I can go from Lake Worth to Boynton Beach or from Boynton to Texas or wherever, but the problem is the same.”

He says they need long-term solutions to support the homeless, but not everyone the Commission agrees.

Palm Beach County Mayor Maria Sachs will meet with leaders from the local municipalities to discuss the issue in September, one month before the law takes effect.
