An arrest made in the brutal death of a sleeping, homeless, transgender person, Andrea Dosspassos, outside Miami City Ballet.
Police say surveillance video shows 53-year-old Gregory Fitzgerald Gibert, slamming the victim's head and face with a metal pipe.
Gibert was out on probation at the time of the homicide and is charged with one count of first-degree murder. Gibert is being held without bond.
Records show Gibert had been released from prison just last week after spending more than a year in custody for felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Chairman of the Miami-Dade LGBTQ+ advisory board Ariel Trueba calls it a hate crime and said the victim was extremely vulnerable as a homeless transgender person.
"Miami Beach is supposed to be welcoming to the trans community. Public safety should be the highest priority of law enforcement," said Trueba.
