A Fort Pierce woman has been sentenced to life in prison for stabbing a St. Lucie County Sheriff's deputy.

23-year old Leigha Michelle Day was found guilty of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer last week.

Deputy Cody Colangelo was responding to a rollover crash in March of 2022 when he came upon Day.

He was attempting to help her when she started to run away and then turned around and stabbed him in the neck.

"I just started holding my neck as tight as I could to try to stop the bleeding...get up to where my car was and just kind of stay there until I could get an ambulance. Never in a million years did I think that just a simple crash would turn into me getting stabbed."

Colangelo's body cam captured the entire incident.

He underwent a two-hour surgery where doctors had to replace part of the artery in his neck with one from his leg. He missed 2 and a half months of work and was in the courtroom for Day's sentencing on Wednesday.
