Broward School Board member, Torey Alston, is requesting that the board rescind teacher pay raises that were approved in February and give everyone a raise.

Alston is an appointee of Gov. Ron DeSantis and accuses the school board of mismanaging money. With enrollment down and COVID relief money dwindling, the school board is facing a budget crisis with $70 million in looming liabilities. Next year's budget will have to be cut by 20-million dollars just to pay teacher salaries.

Broward teacher's union president Anna Fusco negotiated the teacher pay raise and says they already got a pay bump in their last check.

She says she agrees that all 38-thousand school employees should get a raise, but the teachers negotiated and got theirs approved.

Alston's request, called “No Employee Left Behind,” is scheduled to be discussed at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday.
