You may have encountered deputies from the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office's Mounted Unit. Sheriff Ric Bradshaw says those horses have been kept extra busy over the last few months in Wellington, during the Winter Equestrian Festival.

"There's a lot of trails back in there that people travel on. So at the heights of the season out there, the mounted unit will be back on those trails and making sure that we don't have the petty theft from the stables or somebody trying to steal a horse."

He says you may also notice deputies on horses in the Jupiter Farms area.

The sheriff says the unit also comes in handy in another situation.

"If we have what we think is going to be a pretty good size protest or disturbance, the horses will be in that area because it's a good crowd control measure for them to get into a crowd and kind of move them back a little bit."

The Mounted Unit is made up of about six horses and the deputies who ride them.
