City Councilwoman Bounced From Ballot Ahead Of March 19th Election

Less than three weeks before the Palm Beach County municipal elections, which run during Florida's Presidential Preference Primary, and a Riviera Beach City Councilwoman is being bounced from the ballot.

An appeals court on Tuesday ruled that Julia Botel is not eligible to run for re-election.

Her opponent, Glen Spiritis, challenged her eligibility because Botel paid her filing fee with a cashier's check. By law, candidates must only pay those fees with a check from their political campaign.

A lower court's ruling kept her on the ballot until the ruling from the state's Fourth District Court of Appeal removed her.

Botel represents the Singer Island district of Riviera Beach. She has two days to appeal the ruling, but hasn't said whether that will happen.

Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections Wendy Sartory Link says that ballots are already printed with Botel's name on them and some people have already sent in mail-in ballots. But any votes for the councilwoman will not count and signs will be posted at polling places.
