NOAA Set to Launch Experimental Updated Cone Graphic

Starting around August 15, 2024, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) will roll out an experimental version of the cone graphic. This updated graphic will now include inland tropical storm and hurricane watches and warnings for the continental United States. Here are the key points:

  1. Purpose and Research: Social science research suggests that incorporating inland watches and warnings into the cone graphic will improve communication regarding inland wind risk during tropical cyclone events. According to the NHC,  "the goal is to strike a balance by providing essential information without overcomplicating the existing graphic."
  2. Feedback Opportunity: During the experimental phase, there will be opportunities for users to provide feedback on the new graphic. The NHC values input from the community to refine and enhance the tool.
  3. Availability and Timing: Due to its experimental nature, the updated graphic may not be immediately available alongside the current operational cone graphic. However, it should generally be accessible within 30 minutes of the advisory release. Rest assured, the existing operational cone graphic will continue to be accessible, and there will be no changes regarding how coastal watches and warnings are displayed on that graphic.
  4. Accessing the New Graphic: The experimental inland cone graphic will be accessible on the NHC website for both full and intermediate advisories.

Stay informed, stay safe, and be prepared during hurricane season!
