Due to a drastic decline in enrollment, the Broward school district plans to close or overhaul at least five schools.
Scores more schools could be shuttered in the coming years.
Broward County Schools superintendent Dr. Peter Licata says parents have lots of options with school choice and this has led to a decline in enrollment.
"Broward is growing with adults not children. We need to get smaller, and we can't continue to pay students who are not there." according to Licata.
According to the district, the schools in jeopardy are located in Miramar, Pembroke Pines, Fort Lauderdale and Coral Springs.
But Dr. Licata wants to hear from the community before a final decision is made.
First public hearing will be held Thursday night at 6 p.m. at Fort Lauderdale High School.
