Parents of babies and young children have the opportunity to lock in their college tuition costs now.

Thursday marks the start of Open Enrollment in the Florida Prepaid College tuition program, which runs through the month of April.

Spokesperson Meredith Westheimer says this 35th anniversary brings big discounts.

"So prices are now the lowest in ten years, starting at just $34 a month for 1-year University (plan) for a newborn."

She says prices are reduced by up to 25 percent, citing consecutive years of lower than expected tuition and fee increases at the state level.

It will also benefit some current customers whose children haven't used their savings yet.

"Some people will actually have their plan paid off early because of these reductions in prices or will even get refunds."

The Florida Prepaid College Board has been reaching out to customers who've purchased a plan since 2008, to let them know about the savings. One such email notes that if customers pay via automated contributions (ACH), payments will continue without pause at the lower monthly amount and that they can view the new monthly payment and total plan price in their online account.

Governor DeSantis applauded the price reduction, saying it goes along with his administration’s goal of making sure a postsecondary education is affordable for Florida families.
