Greenacres, FL - A Greenacres man has been arrested for allegedly leaving threatening voicemails towards a U.S. Congressperson, referencing a past association with a suspected Chinese spy.

Authorities say 72-year-old Michael Shapiro was apprehended on Wednesday morning for allegedly leaving threatening voicemails for a U.S. Congressperson on December 19th.

The U.S. Department of Justice revealed that Shapiro left five explicit voicemails, including threats to harm the Congressperson and referenced a suspected Chinese spy named Christine Fang, without naming the specific Congressperson involved.

Notably, Fang had past associations with California Representative Eric Swalwell's campaign in 2012.

While the Department of Justice did not identify the House member, Swalwell has confirmed the threats were targeting him.

Shapiro faces charges related to transmitting threatening communications and appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart in the Southern District of Florida.
