Smoke Shops In Boynton Beach May Soon Have To Take An Extra Step

The City of Boynton Beach is concerned about "curb appeal," and some think the way they will improve it is to tint a few windows.

Vice Mayor Thomas Turkin brought a proposal to the City Commission to require businesses selling bongs and other smoking devices to ensure nobody outside that store can see them.

"If I was a parent and I'm walking with a five-year-old, I don't want that five-year-old pointing to that paraphernalia and asking what that is."

He says the city needs to have some form of consistency and that curb appeal is important, especially if they're going to invest in the city.

Commissioner Aimee Kelley disagrees with this idea, saying it may have the opposite effect of what's intended to do.

"By us forcing tinting, dark tinting, we're just going to be looking at black window fronts and it's not going to be appealing."

She suggests having those businesses move tobacco paraphernalia to the back of the store.

City officials will work on crafting an ordinance that can be voted on.
