Final Harvest Supermoon Brings Surprise Viewing

Eyes up, skygazers! Tonight's harvest moon will be the last supermoon of 2023.

The bright, full moon will be visible between this evening and Friday morning, barring any cloud cover. The reason it's called "super", according to Parkland astronomy enthusiast and award-winning Marjory Stoneman Douglas educator, Kyle Jeter, is because every 29 1/2 days when you have the sun, earth and moon aligned, in this case the moon at its closest elliptical distance to us, what's called perigee, it can seem much bigger to the naked eye.

Jeter adds that along with it, we'll be able to spot three special planetary viewings of: Saturn, Jupiter and Mercury

He says, for the more professional, deep into the Everglades offers spectacular views, as do other spots across South Florida, but you cannot beat the vantage view of the supermoon rising from the beach.

If you miss this harvest supermoon, you’ll have to wait until the next one, Sept. 18, 2024.
