No Quorum = No Vote On Broward Schools' New Superintendent

Broward County will not have a new school superintendent on Monday, like expected.

Even though six school board members were present at this morning's special meeting to confirm Dr. Peter Licata's contract, only three were there physically, so there was no quorum, and the meeting was abruptly adjourned.

Sarah Leonardi was one of those physically there. "It was very disappointing, and it was embarrassing," she said.

Dr. Allen Zeman was also there and added, things like this have become common in the district. "We snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory, and unfortunately today was another example of that tawdry tale."

They hope once Licata is approved, things will change.

A new board meeting to confirm Licata's contract hasn't been set.

Interim Superintendent Dr. Earlean Smiley claimed she was initially told five school board members would have been present, so they would have had the quorum to hold the meeting.

She's disappointed with what happened today.
